Salix 'Americana'
(Synonyms:
S. eriocephala Michx. x S. petiolaris Sm.,
S. rigida Muhlenb x S. petiolaris Sm.,
S. cordata Muhlenb. non Mich x S. petiolaris Sm.)
(Order Code D49)
In the Mediterranean, this is one of the main basketry willows
and would be used as peeled, "white" willow.
In the U.K. however, the rods stay relatively short
and make it less suitable for basket weaving.
Nevertheless, the red tinged leaves of this hardy willow
make a lovely display of colour during the early summer
and gives it value as an ornamental willow, growing even on poor soils.
